In general anyone can start a fitness programme, however, for some people it would be best to consult a doctor first.

If you answer “yes” to any of the questions below, consult your doctor before starting your exercise programme. Also consult your doctor if you have any doubts about your current state of health and starting an exercise routine.

Has your doctor ever said you have a heart condition?

Do you ever feel pain in your chest?

Have you ever had spells of dizziness?

Do you have any joint or bone problems?

Have you ever suffered from high blood pressure?

Are you currently on any medication?

Are you pregnant or have you had a baby in the last 6 months?

Are you over 40 and not used to exercise?

Are you 70 or older?

If you are ready to start look at the information on the other fit pages. You need to be doing something that raises your heart rate for at least 20 minutes three times a week and then progress from there. While exercising you should be able to talk, albeit in short sentences. If you can carry on a normal conversation you are not working hard enough.
